Physical Training Assistants

What is a Physical Training Assistant?

Physical Training Assistants (PTAs) are individuals carefully recruited and trained to demonstrate and teach the techniques of a complete well-adult physical examination. Their training is supervised by medical school faculty.

PTAs serve as both models and instructors, working alongside clinical faculty to support beginning learners. They help translate medical techniques into clear, accessible language while reinforcing the professional terminology expected in clinical settings.

In addition to demonstrating exam techniques, PTAs are trained to provide constructive feedback on communication, technique, and professionalism—creating a supportive, learner-centered environment.

PTAs work with a wide range of learners, including medical, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant students, as well as residents. Sessions may be one-on-one or in small groups and can focus on specific exam components or the full physical exam.

Educational Benefits for Learners:

  • Learning in a safe, low-stress environment

  • Receiving meaningful, real-time feedback

  • Humanizing the patient encounter through guided interaction
