Physical Training Assistants

What is a Physical Training Assistant?

Physical Training Assistants (PTAs) are people who are carefully recruited and trained in the basic techniques of performing a complete physical examination. All training of PTAs is overseen by medical school faculty.

The PTAs serve the roles of model or trainer. They are trained in the basic techniques of performing a complete well-adult physical examination. The PTA works with the clinical faculty as an interpreter for beginning learners to help explain the techniques of the examination in clear layman’s terms while reinforcing the medical terminology expected from a health care professional. A PTA is also trained in feedback techniques to encourage the learner and can provide feedback on communication skills and professionalism.

PTAs work with varying levels of learners from students (medical, nursing, physical therapy, physician assistants) to residents. The level of the learner indicates the level of training and feedback. Sessions may be individual or as small groups and can range from focused physical examination sections to the complete examination.

The Educational Benefits for the learner include:

  • Humanizing the Patient
  • Providing Feedback
  • Learning in a safe and relaxed environment
